Club Members stuffing and assembling comfort pillows
GFWC Lutz-Land O’Lakes Woman’s Club members recently held a marathon “stuff & sew” project and produced a mountain of comfort pillows which were donated to Ovarian Cancer Advocates and Spokespersons, Katina Johnston and Carole Martinez, who are Board Members of Ovacome Gynecologic Cancer Alliance.

These pillows will be distributed through local doctors’ offices and St. Joseph’s ob/gyn surgical department. The pillows will be placed in “comfort bags” along with hygiene and fragrance items for post-surgical recuperation.

Ms. Johnston and Ms. Martinez, both of whom are ovarian cancer survivors, spoke to the Woman’s Club members and took questions on the topic of ovarian cancer. The message from the speakers was to trust your gut, listen to your body and know the symptoms of ovarian cancer. September has been designated as Ovarian Cancer Month and teal ribbons are worn to bring awareness to the uphill fight against this disease.

The Woman’s Club group has been present each and every year on this date to wave flags in both Lutz and Land O’Lakes to mark this sad occasion. It was heartening to listen to the resounding chorus of truck and car horns acknowledging their presence and the display of all the flags.

GFWC Lutz-Land O’Lakes Woman’s Club welcomed as their guests Easter Seals staff and special guests, 9 year old Mya Metheny and her family. Mya has, since the age of 5 years, seen the need and has committed to help children at the Murray Childhood Development Center of Easter Seals/Florida by regularly reading to them.
