The theme of this year’s parade is “A Salute to the Lutz Volunteer Fire Department” and the Woman’s Club is sponsoring Jay Muffly, last President of the Board of the Lutz F.D. as their candidate for Lutz Guv’na. A team of members has been working together with member husband, Fred Molis, who has hand-crafted a fabulous Dalmatian mascot who will ride along on the Woman’s Club parade float. Mr. Molis, a talented craftsman, fashioned “Sparky” out of chicken wire and other materials while his “assistants” applied the papier mache and painted the finishing touches.

The Woman’s Club, as co-sponsor of this wonderful annual community event, has organized the cake / pie contest, will provide breakfast food offerings at their booth, have face painting and other crafts for children and much, much more.

Member Sharon J. Bard, Cookoff Champ
GFWC Lutz-Land O’Lakes recent Guv’na Fundraiser Luncheon featured a Crockpot Cookoff Contest. Members competed with fabulous recipes including appetizer items, soups, entrees and desserts, all of which were prepared in crockpots.

After enjoying generous samplings of each, members and guests voted and determined that Sharon J. Bard was the hands-down winner with her delicious recipe of chicken, yellow rice and black beans. Sharon’s big pot was emptied by the tasters who declared it to be a huge success. This enjoyable event was in support of the Woman’s Club-backed candidate for Guv’na, Jay Muffley, last President of the Board of the now decommissioned Lutz Volunteer Fire Dept. The winner of this zany, tongue-in-cheek political race will be announced at the Lutz 4th of July celebration and duly inaugurated for the next year. All funds raised in this event will be returned to the community through various local charitable organizations and non-profit groups.

This zany race and announcement of the new Guv’na is a highlight of the annual Lutz 4th of July celebration well known as the “Best Little Town 4th of July Parade” in Florida. The Woman’s Club has planned a number of fundraisers in support of their candidate including special luncheons on Thurs. June 19 and Thurs. June 26 at the Lutz Community Center (behind Lutz Library) for a donation of only $6. The public is most welcome and luncheon entrée, salad, beverage and dessert will be served at noon so dine in or take out.

The Woman’s Club has also scheduled a Guv’na Flea Market for Sat. June 21 from 8 am to 2 pm at a member’s home at 220 W. County Line Rd., Lutz near the corner of Hwy. 41. Everyone knows the Woman’s Club always puts together the BEST fleas in the area with fabulous bargains. Come out early to support our candidate and grab some treasures at great prices. All proceeds from the Guv’na fundraisers come back to benefit the community through needy local charities and non-profits.

GFWC Lutz-Land O’Lakes Woman’s Club has long been known to recycle and conserve for the benefit of the environment and the community. Members Aniko Solomonson and Nancy Boschert recently took recycling to a new level by finding a treasure trove of at least 150 children’s books in a dumpster. The ladies weren’t too proud to “dumpster dive” in order to recover books for various children’s reading projects sponsored by the woman’s club. Books are regularly delivered by club members to area laundromats specifically for children to enjoy and even take home to keep free of charge. Many times these donated books are the only reading materials in some homes for the children to enjoy, particularly for the pre-school and kindergarten ages. Books are also donated to Metropolitan Ministries and area domestic violence shelters on behalf of their resident children by the woman’s club.
