Every month GFWC Lutz Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club arts committee has a craft day (bi-weekly during the summer). During the meetings, we may make favors for distribution to Meals on Wheels and/or Senior Center clients at Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. One of our ongoing craft projects is to make plarn (plastic yarn) and then crochet it into sleeping mats for the homeless. We also make items to sell at our Lutz Arts and Crafts Show held in December.
We support Arts by donations of either cash, labor or craft supplies. We donated supplies to local libraries Makers Programs and to a school art teacher. We donated money to Arts4All, Carrollwood Cultural Center and Moffitt’s “Arts in a Bag” program. We again supported the Old Lutz School, a historic landmark, by assembling the Nutcracker Display. One of our members had donated hundreds on nutcrackers to the Old Lutz School. We erected a huge fireplace and stood nutcrackers on its mantle, down the sides and inside the fireplace. We also put up a Christmas tree in the Community Christmas room. The tree was decorated with handmade paper ornament. Members also served hot cocoa, greeted visitors and watched over the various displays when the school was open to the public.
Each year, we hold a local arts and crafts competition. 1st place winners go on to District Level Competition. Winners at the District Level then advance to State competition.
